Michael D. Gautreaux, Ph.D., F.ACHI is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr. Gautreaux is the director of the HLA/Immunogenetics and Immunodiagnostics Laboratories at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He has previously served as a consultant HLA Laboratory director at Via Christi Medical Center in Wichita, KS, VCU/Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, and the American Red Cross-Southeastern Region in Charlotte, NC.
Dr. Gautreaux is a former president of both the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Dr. Gautreaux has served terms on several committees for OPTN/UNOS including the Histocompatibility Committee, the Pediatrics Committee, the I.T. committee, the Membership and Professional Standards Committee, as well as the UNOS Board of Directors. He is a past member of the Board of Directors for Life Point of South Carolina, the OPO for that state and a former member of the Medical Advisory Board for HonorBridge, the OPO for eastern North Carolina.
Dr. Gautreaux attended, as a student, the Basic Histocompatibility Course in 1997 and the Histocompatibility Specialists’ Course in 1998. He began teaching in the courses in 2012. In 2024, he became the director for both courses. Dr. Gautreaux considers teaching in the AFDT courses to be a delightful obligation to the transplant community and cherishes working with the other faculty as well as the excellent AFDT office staff.
